WUVI broadcasts on 97.3 Khz on the FM dial with a license to operate in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, utilizing student and community volunteer operators. The Communication Department currently offers a comprehensive program in different aspects of broadcast communication, radio production, and station operations. The WUVI Media Club offers new media and multi-media exposure.
While currently undergoing a major transition, WUVI FM 97.3 generally serves the community with broadcast media. We deliver messages to and from the university. We serve our audiences with a steady flow of varied content including music, announcements, news, entertainment, and local culture.
WUVI also serves as a channel for the university to be together as one community, mindful that the staff, faculty, students of the university will be listening as well as the larger community of the US Virgin Islands and the Eastern Caribbean region. With an online stream and occasional live video streaming to social media, we also serve a global audience.
The content and products we bring to the community are uplifting, educational, informative, and helpful. We counter the chaos and entropy of the world by providing excellent information to the community. We do not air material that is offensive, degrading, or demeaning to people. We air no shows with music that demeans women, promotes drugs, or incites violence. Our mission is to serve the community and use the media's power for the good of the people. We hold ourselves to the highest ethical standard.
Catch the new media wave with students at the University of the Virgin Islands campus radio and new media station.
WUVI is an affiliate of the Pacifica Foundation and carries some of its more acclaimed programs, including Democracy Now.
Among the programs that have been on WUVI are the Tom Joyner Morning show, which we only stopped airing after Hurricanes Irma and Maria due to losing our commercial station AM 1090. The LP-FM station is non-commercial, so would not be able to air TJMS due to the high volume of advertisements that run throughout the show. With lots of integrated local content, the university is still home of Tom Joyner in the eastern Caribbean, but can not air it until a solution is found. We can air underwriting messages to share information about sponsoring organizations, agencies or individuals.
WUVI mainly features local, regional, and international music as well as local news along with lots of the high caliber information that the University brings to the community symposia, workshops, and special events, guest lecturers will all be made available to the whole community through WUVI.
WUVI is run primarily by UVI communication students under the supervision of a Station Manager and a Culture and Educational director under a Title III grant. The Station has an on-call engineer available for technical support. Management and staff are all under the supervision of the Project Director or a designated faculty advisor. Information on current Management Staff can be disseminated by the Station Manager.
Student staff are normally required to register for the appropriate radio communication course offered during the semester in order to perform management roles and other duties essential to the operation.
